Skills Development FILM
Planning
Chosen Genre: Western
Lighting: The lighting will be low key, as the scene is set within a saloon, it will be dark and dingy.
Mise-en-scene: The bar will be made of wood with a couple of men sat at it, there will be glasses of whiskey on the bar with some pints of larger as well. The barman is polishing up glasses, there will be lots of bottles at the back of the bar, a selection of whiskeys, and other spirits. The saloon will be fairly busy with most of the tables occupied by 'cowboys'.
Shot types, angles and camera movement: The shot types will be consisting of some establishing shots, setting the scene, but mainly consisting of mid to extreme close ups, these will be mainly of the face, but when the man clenches his fist the camera will be low and fairly close up to his hand. Other camera angles may include a birds eye view of the saloon, a worms eye view/ low camera angle for the hand shot. Also there will be many eye-level shots too.
Sound: There will be loud noises in the background, metal against metal, glasses being set down onto the table, then there will be non-diegetic sound, this will be when the actors will speak over the video again, any VoiceOver will be recorded after for a clearer crisper sound quality.
Characters: Will be wearing old clothes, in keeping with the genre of the film. Western, will have props, such as old fashioned guns and sherif/ cowboy hats. All of the characters will be very masculine, strong. The barman will be a strong, tattooed man. Maybe recently released from prison?
Option 1
The scene is very dark and dingy, created by the use of low key lighting. The saloon has wooden shutter type doors, which will slam shut behind the man. There will be roughly 8 tables closely packed together in the rather small in size saloon. At the far end of the room will be the bar, filling the entire width of the room, there is a rather tall man. The bartender is polishing the glasses before putting them back to where they belong. There are particularly masculine tattooed men sat at the bar, much like the bartender. Each man has a half glass of whiskey.
The man starts to walk towards the far end of the saloon where the bar is, the customers stop what they were doing and turn around. Everyone now has their eyes on this man, this man who would easily get beaten up in a fight, very short. (Camera shots of the customers eyes here, and shifts to an establishing shot quickly afterwards) The boots of the man clapping with the ground, the metal spikes spinning on his boots, his revolver is attached tightly to his hip. (Low camera angle, extreme close up of the spikes and the boots and then the revolver on the mans hip) Nobody has managed to get a glimpse of the mans face yet. His hat covering his face, (Medium close up of the hat covering the face of the man) when the man finally approaches the bar, he tips the hat back on his head. The bartender sees his face, the face of a beast. (Close up of the mans face, side profile) Scarred all over, this man has obviously been in his fair share of fights. The man very calmly asks the bartender for another man called Tony, the bartender pauses, and responds back with a rather deep aggressive voice, (Camera shot cuts to whoever is talking)
'Tony isn't available for meetings at the moment'.
The man obviously quite annoyed with the bartenders response, replies slightly more dominantly.
'Get me Tony now, tell him to come out or his business will no longer be welcomed.'
'Get me Tony now, tell him to come out or his business will no longer be welcomed.'
The bartender responds by aggressively pointing at the man, tells the man,
'Get lost, or I'll have to make you leave.'
'Get lost, or I'll have to make you leave.'
The man stares at the bartender, (the camera focuses into the mans hand) which slowly becomes to tighten into a fist. The men at the bar says to the man,
'I'd back down if I were you, he has killed all 7 of the Johnson brothers with 1 bullet'
The man grabs his revolver, and aims it at the bartender, who very quickly grabs the nearest thing to him which was a knife. (Medium shot of the stand off, cuts to a close up of the revolver) The man snarkily says to the men sitting at the bar, (Cuts to the men at the bar)
'But has anyone ever told you not to bring a knife to a gunfight'. (Camera shot cuts to a view of down the top of the revolver towards the bartender)

Great ideas Ellis and I love the scarred face detail! However - you stop telling me which camera shots you'll use once the dialogue starts!
